Byron Callies
completed his undergraduate degree
(Bachelor of Science in Health
Sciences) at The George Washington
University and his graduate degree
(Master of Science in Health
Sciences with a concentration in
Emergency and Disaster Management)
from TUI International. He is
certified as a Healthcare Safety
Professional (Board of Certified
Healthcare Safety), Professional
Emergency Manager (State of
Michigan), Certified Emergency
Manager (International Association
of Emergency Managers) and Master
Exercise Practitioner (FEMA).
Currently,
Byron is a principal of
Comprehensive Emergency Management
Associates, LLC. His primary duties
involve exercise design and conduct
and healthcare emergency management
functions. As a contracted CEMA
service, Byron fills the role of
Environment of Care Manager at
Ingham Regional Medical Center, a
350-bed dual campus facility located
in Lansing, Michigan. As the
Environment of Care Manager he
directly manages three environment
of care function areas: safety, fire
safety, and emergency management.
In addition, he is Chairperson for
IRMC’s Emergency Management
Subcommittee and McLaren Health Care
Corporation’s Emergency Management
Committee.
Previously,
Byron served as the Regional
Bioterrorism Coordinator for
District 1 in Michigan. As the
regional coordinator, he was
instrumental in providing leadership
to District 1 organizations and the
State of Michigan for preparing
communities for a biological weapons
incident. As a result, the District
1 Regional Medical Response
Coalition (D1RMRC) developed a
systems improvement plan that
provided recommendations to help
hospitals, public health, and
emergency management prepare for a
biological weapons incident.
Byron is a Navy
veteran (10 years active duty; four
years reserves). As a Special
Operations Independent Duty Corpsman
in the Navy, Byron was involved with
medical planning, curriculum
development, and instruction. A
certified surgical skills
instructor, he provided instruction
to Naval Special Warfare medics in
combat medicine. Byron played a
vital role in developing the Medical
Management of Chemical and
Biological Casualties Course that is
used by all Naval Special Warfare
units. He was also involved in WMD
research and development programs
for Naval Special Warfare.
Throughout his career, he supported
military operations around the
world, including Central and South
America, the Balkans, and the Middle
East. During his final two years of
active duty service, he was the
Director for Medical Training
Programs for East coast Naval
Special Warfare units. While in the
Navy Reserves he served as the
Senior Enlisted Leader for the
Operational Support Unit, Training
Detachment – Land Warfare EAST.
